Following the tradition of the Saiyan characters in the series to be named for vegetables, Vegeta's name, being from the Saiyan royal family, is an obvious pun on the word vegetable itself. Vegeta later marries Bulma has a son named Trunks and a daughter named Bulla.

Dragon Ball Z

Vegeta was the son of King Vegeta, the king of the Saiyan race and ruler of Planet Vegeta. King Vegeta and his race were under the ruler of the galactic warlord Frieza, who, believing that Vegeta could some day prove to be useful to him, forced King Vegeta to give up his son.

Vegeta grew up under Frieza's grip, forced to do the tyrant's bidding with the threat of his father's death if he refused. However, Frieza eventually grew fearful of the Saiyans, believing they would one day rise up against him, and wiped out their race, including King Vegeta, with few surviving. Frieza spared Vegeta, along with Nappa and Raditz, keeping them as his slaves to do his bidding for many years. However, Vegeta grew contempt for Frieza and schemed to one day become powerful enough to defeat the evil tyrant

Saiyan Saga

Vegeta and Nappa decided to invade Earth upon receiving a dying Raditz's report of seven magic objects known as the Dragon Balls, which will grant the user any wish. Vegeta planned to use the Dragon Balls to wish for immortality, and the two set off to the planet. On the way, Vegeta and Nappa invaded and destroyed Planet Arlia.

Upon arriving on Earth, Vegeta and Nappa wreaked havoc on the planet, killing many civilians. Eventually, the two were confronted by Piccolo, Krillin, and Gohan, with Tien, Chiaotzu and Yamcha arriving shortly afterwards. However, Nappa easily decimated the Z Fighters until only Krillin and Gohan remained. Before Nappa can kill them, however, Goku arrives on the scene and challenges Nappa to battle. The two fight, with Goku managing to defeat Nappa, crippling him. Vegeta, disgusted by Nappa's weakness, betrays and kills his ally before challenging Goku himself.

Vegeta and Goku arrive at a wasteland to battle, where the former offers the latter a chance to join him. However, Goku refuses, seeing Vegeta's selfish intentions. The two battle, with Vegeta initially dominating the fight. However, when Goku begins to gain the upper hand, Vegeta resorts to transforming himself into a Great Ape, increasing his power substantially. In desperation, Goku attempts to use the Spirit Bomb, but Vegeta disrupts it. Seeing Goku at a disadvantage, Gohan, Krillin and Yajirobe join the frey, managing to severe Vegeta's tail and revert him back to normal. Despite this, Vegeta still proved more powerful than the Z Fighters.

Severely weakened, Goku, Gohan and Krillin managed to use the Spirit Bomb on Vegeta, weakening him. Despite this, Vegeta survived and unleashed a powerful attack, but this failed to kill his foes. Gohan then transformed into a Great Ape himself, overpowering Vegeta. Though Vegeta managed to cut off Gohan's tail and return him to normal, he was left severely wounded and unable to fight any longer.

Vegeta attempts to retreat in his space pob, but was caught by Krillin, who attempted to kill Vegeta. However, Goku asked Krillin to spare him, and he reluctantly agreed. Vegeta then fled Earth, vowing to return and seek revenge on Goku and his friends.

Frieza Saga

After healing of his wounds, Vegeta travels to Planet Vegeta when he learns that Frieza has invaded the planet to retrieve the Dragon Balls. Vegeta plots to find the Dragon Balls before Frieza and wish for immortality. Shortly after arrival, Vegeta meets Cui, who had been given the order by Frieza to eliminate Vegeta. However, Vegeta's encounter with the earthlings had increased his strength immensely, as a Saiyan gets a power boost every time they are left at near death. This increased power allows him to easily overpower and kill Cui.

Vegeta later confronts another of Frieza's men, Dodoria, who reveals that Frieza was responsible for destroying Planet Vegeta. Soon after this revelation, Vegeta murders Dodoria. He proceeds to wipe out a Namekian village and obtain its Dragon Ball, and schemes to steal the rest from Frieza when the time comes. He then comes across Frieza's most powerful henchman, Zarbon. Despite Vegeta's increased power, he is unable to overcome Zarbon and is defeated. Zarbon initially left him for dead, but was sent back to retrieve Vegeta so he could be interrogated for information on the location of one of the Dragon Balls.

However, Vegeta escaped his confinement and managed to steal the Dragon Balls taken by Frieza. He then arrives at Krillin and Bulma's hideout, where he is confronted by Zarbon. With his strength increased, Vegeta manages to kill Zarbon, and takes Krillin and Bulma's Dragon Ball. He then returns to the location of his collected Dragon Balls, but finds that Gohan has stolen one of them. Enraged, he flies off to find them. However, he senses the arrival of the Ginyu Special Forces, and reluctantly forms an alliance with Gohan and Krillin to defeat them.

Though Vegeta manages to kill Guldo, the trio are unable to stand up against the rest of the Ginyu Force. However, Goku arrives and easily defeats them, though he allows Jeice to escape. Vegeta, disgusted at Goku's act of mercy, kills the defeated Ginyu members. When Jeice returns with Captain Ginyu, Vegeta abandons Goku to fight the two by himself, leading to Ginyu swapping bodies with Goku. Ginyu and Jeice then confronted Vegeta, Gohan and Krillin, leading to Jeice's death and Goku being restored to his original body, with Ginyu being placed into the body of a frog. Despite this, Goku was left grievously wounded and placed in a recovery chamber to heal.

While Vegeta sleeps, Gohan and Krillin, along with a Namekian child named Dende, gather the Dragon Balls and wish for Piccolo to be revived and taken to Namek. Their third wish is interrupted by an enraged Vegeta, who demands that Dende wish for him to be immortal. Before his wish can be granted, however, the elder Namek Guru passes away, rendering the Dragon Balls useless, leaving Vegeta furious. At that moment, Frieza arrives and, furious that his chance for immortality has been lost, vows to kill them all.

Vegeta, Gohan, Krillin and Piccolo battle Frieza, who goes through multiple transformations to increase his power, culminating in him unveiling his true, most powerful form. Vegeta, who had received a Zenkai boost from Dende, challenges Frieza to battle, claiming that he is now a Super Saiyan. However, Frieza proves to be much more powerful than Vegeta, who can't even harm him. Vegeta, upon realizing that his power is far inferior to Frieza's, loses the will to keep on fighting. Frieza promptly begins pummeling him mercilessly, leaving him on the brink of death. He is about to finish Vegeta off when Goku arrives, more powerful than before. In spite of this, Frieza fatally wounds Vegeta. On the brink of death, Vegeta begs Goku to defeat Frieza and restore the pride of the Saiyan race before dying of his injuries.

Vegeta is later revived by a wish from Earth's Dragon Balls to resurrect everyone killed on Namek by Frieza and his army. Vegeta is transported to Earth, along with Frieza's other revived victims. Upon his revival, Vegeta strives to become a Super Saiyan like Goku, and ventures out into space to find him after Frieza's defeat and Namek's destruction.
